Michael Excell
Director of “Nocturnal”
Meet the Creator
A huge thank you to Michael for these thoughtful answers and for giving us a glimpse behind the scenes of your work. We at Hollywood Indie Festival are cheering you on as you continue to create. Enjoy the interview below!
What is the central conflict and unique selling point of your project?
The Vampire Boss of the Bronx, Damien Alucard, haunts the streets of Brooklyn and draws closer to a much anticipated encounter with a rival werewolf out for revenge. This film explores a world where vampires, witches, werewolves, Mother Nature and even the Grimm Reaper roam modern day New York City.
Who is the ideal viewer for this project, and which existing films/series is it most comparable to?
The target audience for “Nocturnal” will be for mostly mature viewers who have a love for fantasy, vampire and werewolf lore with a twist of gritty sci fi drama. Think, Underworld meets New Jack City.
What was the primary inspiration behind this story, and why is now the right time for the world to see it?
It’s been a while since we’ve seen a dark portrayal of the night creatures based in present day New York City. As a New Yorker I wanted to make a New York film that explores the talents of actors casted based on their abilities and not social media followers. “Nocturnal” is great representation of the people who actually live in these neighborhoods and are real fans of the sci fi/fantasy-drama genre.
Is the project fully completed, or are you currently seeking distribution, finishing funds, or representation?
I am currently seeking distribution for my completed project. Nocturnal has received an award for Best Fantasy in the (digital/online) Grand Laurel International Film Festival 2026 and Official Selection for the Tokyo Lift-Off Film Festival 2026 (digital/online) but no world premiere status as of yet.
