Gordon Gravley
Screenwriter of “Love and the Art of Displacement”
Meet the Creator
A huge thank you to Gordon for these thoughtful answers and for giving us a glimpse behind the scenes of your work. We at Hollywood Indie Festival are cheering you on as you continue to create. Enjoy the interview below!
What is the central conflict and unique selling point of your project?
The sport of parkour – also called “the art of displacement” – is all about overcoming obstacles. Whether it’s a coach trying to save her father’s failing gym, a sculptor desperate for inspiration or a young man in contention with his erratic mental health, the timeless theme of facing fears and challenges is at the heart of Love and the Art of Displacement.
Who is the ideal viewer for this project, and which existing films/series is it most comparable to?
Who doesn’t love a story of struggle and triumph involving a sport? Think of an athletic activity and there’s probably been a film made around it. To name just a few: Boxing – Cinderella Man, Rocky; Soccer – Bend It Like Beckham; Golf – Tin Cup; Baseball – Trouble With the Curve; Wrestling – Vision Quest, The Wrestler; Surfing – Soul Surfer; Gymnastics – Stick It, Peaceful Warrior; even Ping Pong – Marty Supreme. So why not parkour?
What was the primary inspiration behind this story, and why is now the right time for the world to see it?
As I watched my young son in class at a local parkour gym one day, it occurred to me that there was a lack of narratives about the activity that didn’t involve a heist of some kind or James Bond (Casino Royale) chasing down a suspect. Love and the Art of Displacement is an alchemy of universal themes – family, mental health, romance, perseverance and community – that are as relevant now as they ever were.
Is the project fully completed, or are you currently seeking distribution, finishing funds, or representation?
Currently, Love and the Art of Displacement has been recognized in a number of recent (2026) competitions:
Official Selections in Tokyo Film & Screenplay Awards and London Vision Film Festival
Nominee for Best Screenplay – International Indie Film & Screenplay Festival
Winner: Best Synopsis – Hollywood International Indie Film & Screenplay Awards
Winner: Best Feature Script – Grand Laurel International Film Festival
The ultimate goal, of course, is to find the right someone (producer or representation) to help see this story of love and parkour through the rest of its journey, from page to screen.
